There’s something about living near the water that changes the way you think about home.

Here in Virginia’s Northern Neck, we’re surrounded by the Chesapeake Bay, the Rappahannock River, beautiful gardens, old homes, and a slower pace of life that I think naturally finds its way indoors.

Homes around Kilmarnock don’t need to feel perfectly styled to feel beautiful. To me, the most inviting spaces are the ones that feel comfortable, collected, and lived in, a place where coffee is enjoyed slowly in the morning, friends gather around the table, and everyone feels welcome enough to stay awhile.

That relaxed feeling is one of the things I love most about coastal Virginia, and it’s also a big part of what inspires me at Taft Candle Co.

Creating a coastal home in Kilmarnock is less about following a decorating theme and more about capturing the relaxed character of Virginia’s Northern Neck.

Start With a Feeling

When I think about coastal decorating, I don’t necessarily picture anchors, seashells, and a house filled with blue and white.

Coastal living is much more about the feeling of a space.

Natural light. A well-loved wooden table. Linen napkins. Pottery. Baskets. Fresh flowers. Old books. Pieces collected over time instead of purchased all at once.

Homes throughout Kilmarnock and Virginia’s Northern Neck have such a natural connection to the landscape around them, and I think the prettiest interiors allow some of that character to come through.

Natural wood, woven textures, linen, glass, stone, soft blues and greens, warm creams, muted golds, and earthy tones all work beautifully without making a room feel overly themed.

Your home doesn’t have to look like a “coastal home.”

I may be a little biased, but one of the easiest ways I know to change the feeling of a room is fragrance.

You can walk into the same space, light a candle, and suddenly everything feels a little warmer and more inviting.

Fresh and botanical scents can make a room feel bright and open. Florals bring the garden indoors. Citrus feels cheerful and clean. Coffee-inspired fragrances can make a kitchen instantly cozier.

When I create candles for Taft Candle Co., I think a lot about these everyday moments.

Morning Surf Brew reminds me of those slow mornings when the coffee is fresh and there’s nowhere you need to rush off to.

Waterman’s Reef has a completely different personality, with inspiration drawn from the working waterfronts, oyster culture, and Chesapeake Bay traditions that are such an important part of life here.

Fragrances like Pineapple Sage, Garden Mint, Heirloom Rose, and Limoncello bring in notes of gardens, herbs, flowers, and bright seasonal favorites.

Choosing a candle based on how you want a room to feel can sometimes be even more fun than simply choosing by scent.

Bring a Little of the Outdoors Inside

One of my favorite things about living in this part of Virginia is how much natural beauty surrounds us.

I love bringing a little of it indoors.

That might mean clipping flowers or greenery from the yard, filling an old pitcher with something from the garden, placing a bowl of fruit on the kitchen table, or bringing in a few interesting branches as the seasons change.

It doesn’t have to be elaborate.

In fact, I usually think the less perfect it looks, the better.

A simple arrangement beside a candle can make a table, mantel, or kitchen counter feel finished without looking overly decorated.

It’s an easy way to connect your home to the seasons and to the landscape around Kilmarnock, the Chesapeake Bay, and the Northern Neck.

Use Candlelight Throughout Your Home

Candles don’t have to stay on the coffee table.

Some of my favorite places to use them are the spaces where people naturally gather.

A pair of hand-dipped beeswax tapers can make an ordinary dinner feel special without making it feel formal. Beeswax votives and tealights can add warmth to a mantel, sideboard, screened porch, or dining table.

I especially love beeswax because it’s beautiful even when it isn’t lit. The natural golden color pairs so easily with wood, linen, pottery, greenery, and all of the textures that work so well in relaxed coastal homes.

Try candlelight:

• On the kitchen or dining table

• Along a mantel or sideboard

• On a screened porch

• In a guest room before visitors arrive

• Beside a bathtub

• On an outdoor table during an evening gathering

It’s such a simple detail, but it can completely change the mood of a space.

Make Your Home Welcoming, Not Perfect

The homes I remember most are rarely the ones where everything was perfectly arranged.

They’re the ones where I felt comfortable.

Around the Northern Neck, so much of life revolves around gathering. Friends stop by. Family comes for the weekend. Someone always ends up standing in the kitchen talking while dinner is being made.

A welcoming home doesn’t need to be spotless or professionally styled before someone walks through the door.

Light a candle. Put on some music. Set out something simple to eat. Add a few flowers to the table if you have them.

Those little rituals are often what people remember.

And fragrance can become part of those memories.

Sometimes you smell coffee, a familiar flower, fresh pine, or something warm and comforting years later and immediately think of a particular home, season, or moment with someone you love.

That connection between fragrance, place, and memory is one of the things I love most about making candles.

Let Your Home Change With the Seasons

One of the easiest ways to refresh your home throughout the year is simply to change the fragrance you’re using.

Spring and summer naturally make me reach for brighter botanicals, fresh florals, citrus, garden-inspired fragrances, and scents that feel light and coastal.

As the weather begins to cool, I start craving something a little warmer and more layered — the kind of fragrance that makes you want to put on a sweater, make another cup of coffee, and stay home a little longer.

I’m working on some new seasonal fragrances for the cooler months, and I’m excited to share them soon. I won’t give everything away just yet, but they’re inspired by some of the cozy, familiar scents and textures that make fall and winter feel so special.

Seasonal decorating doesn’t have to mean changing everything in your home.

Sometimes a new candle, a few branches brought in from outside, and a different throw on the sofa are enough.

That’s my favorite kind of decorating: simple, natural, and easy to live with.

Whether you have a waterfront home, an older house filled with character, a cottage, or something completely different, I think the best spaces reflect the people who live there.

Here in Kilmarnock and throughout Virginia’s Northern Neck, we’re lucky to live in a place with so much natural character already built in.

The rivers, gardens, boats, working waterfronts, historic towns, changing seasons, and strong sense of community give us plenty of inspiration.

You don’t have to recreate the Chesapeake Bay inside your home.

A few natural textures, meaningful pieces, beautiful fragrance, and a space designed for real life can be more than enough.
