Are Taper Candles Safe? A Simple Guide to Burning Them Safely at Home

There’s something about taper candles that makes even an ordinary evening feel a little more special.
I love them on a dinner table, tucked into a beautiful candleholder on a mantel, or simply lit while enjoying a quiet evening at home. And since I make hand-dipped beeswax tapers at Taft Candle Co., I’m often thinking about not only how beautiful a candle is, but how it’s actually used once it leaves my hands.
One question people frequently have is:
Are taper candles safe?
The simple answer is yes, taper candles can be enjoyed safely when they’re used properly. But like every candle, a burning taper is an open flame, so the candleholder you choose, where you place it, and how you care for it all matter. The National Fire Protection Association recommends keeping burning candles at least one foot away from anything that can burn and never leaving a candle unattended.
Here are a few simple things I recommend keeping in mind.
Are Taper Candles Safe to Burn at Home?
Yes, when they're placed in a secure candleholder and burned with the same care you would give any other open flame.
Taper candles are different from jar candles because the flame and wax are completely exposed.
That means having the right holder is especially important.
The holder should be sturdy, heat-resistant, and sized so the candle fits securely without leaning or wobbling. Candle safety guidance also recommends using a holder capable of containing any melted wax that may drip while the taper burns.
If your taper feels loose in the holder, I wouldn’t light it until you’ve adjusted the fit or chosen another holder.
Give Your Candle Plenty of Space
One of the easiest ways to safely enjoy taper candles is simply to pay attention to what surrounds them.
I love creating a beautiful tablescape as much as anyone, but dried flowers, greenery, paper napkins, ribbons, books, curtains, and other decorative materials should never be close enough to reach the flame.
The NFPA recommends keeping candles at least 12 inches away from anything that can burn.
This is especially worth remembering during the holidays or when decorating a dining table. It’s easy to build a gorgeous centerpiece and then realize the candle flame is much closer to greenery or decorations than you intended.
A little breathing room keeps the table beautiful and the candle safer to enjoy.
Trim the Wick Before Lighting
Even taper candles benefit from proper wick care.
Before lighting your candle, trim the wick to about ¼ inch. A wick that becomes too long or crooked can contribute to a larger flame, uneven burning, dripping, smoking, or flaring.
It only takes a few seconds, but it can make a noticeable difference in how your candle burns.
And if the flame ever becomes unusually tall or begins repeatedly flickering or smoking, extinguish the candle, allow it to cool, trim the wick, and check its placement before lighting it again.
Keep Taper Candles Away From Drafts
Have you ever noticed a taper candle suddenly start dripping heavily down one side?
The candle may not necessarily be the problem.
Drafts from ceiling fans, air-conditioning vents, open windows, or even frequently traveled areas of a room can disturb the flame. That movement can cause uneven burning, excessive dripping, or visible soot.
Ideally, your taper should have a calm, steady flame.
If it’s dancing wildly while no one is near it, try moving it away from the source of airflow.
Never Leave a Burning Taper Candle Unattended
This is probably the simplest candle rule, but also the most important.
If you’re leaving the room or heading to bed, extinguish your candles first.
You should also keep burning candles somewhere children and pets cannot accidentally reach, bump, or knock them over.
I love the ritual of lighting candles in the evening, but putting them out when I leave the room is part of that ritual too.
Be Thoughtful About Dinner Table Placement
Taper candles and dinner tables are made for each other.

A pair of tapers can turn a simple weeknight dinner into something that feels special without requiring any elaborate decorating.
Just think about where you place them.
Keep flames away from floral arrangements, paper products, loose fabric, and anything else that could catch fire. If people will be reaching across the table, make sure the candles aren’t positioned where sleeves, hair, or hands could easily pass over the flame.
And always make sure the candleholders themselves are stable before everyone sits down.
Beautiful candlelight should add to the evening, not require everyone to carefully maneuver around it.
Do Taper Candles Drip?
They can.
Even a well-made taper may occasionally drip, and environmental conditions have a lot to do with how evenly a candle burns.
Drafts and an improperly maintained wick can contribute to dripping, which is another reason choosing the right candleholder and placing the candle away from moving air is important.
I personally think a little evidence that a candle has actually been enjoyed can be beautiful, but melted wax should always be contained safely by the holder or surface beneath it.
What About Beeswax Taper Candles?
At Taft Candle Co., I love making hand-dipped beeswax taper candles because of their beautiful natural golden color and the traditional process behind them.

Beeswax tapers look just as lovely sitting on a table unlit as they do once the flame is glowing.
From a safety perspective, though, I treat them just like any other candle: proper holder, trimmed wick, plenty of space, protection from drafts, and never leaving the flame unattended.
The beauty of beeswax doesn’t replace good candle care.
Candlelight Should Be Enjoyed
Candles have been part of our homes, gatherings, celebrations, and everyday routines for generations.
For me, taper candles are one of the simplest ways to create warmth at home. They make dinner feel more inviting. They soften a room in the evening. And there’s something wonderfully timeless about watching a pair of candles slowly burn while people linger around the table.
So, are taper candles safe?
Yes, they can be enjoyed safely when they're burned thoughtfully.
Choose a sturdy holder. Trim the wick. Give the flame plenty of space. Keep it away from drafts and anything flammable. And when you leave the room, put it out.
Then enjoy the glow.
